I started this forum for people to comment about the new Star Trek movie. (Also see my review on the Blogs page.)

Overall, a great movie, losts of fun, but it sure poses lots of questions. And there were some few things that raised our eyebrows.....

I heard someone say something about Admiral Archer’s beagle being referred to after seeing it the first time, but I missed that…caught it the second time I saw it, though. I thought Archer was about 80 years before Kirk and Spock on the timeline, which means he would have to be something like 80 or 90 when this happened with Scotty, and it would be a different Beagle than Porthos, but it makes me wonder. I mean, there’s no indication of how long ago this happened to Scotty, and who knows how long he’s been on that ice-surrounded station. Assuming he’s a Lieutenant Commander (as he was in the series, but I didn’t think to look for the braid on his sleeve once he gets in uniform), then he’s probably been in Starfleet for a few years…but still, given that Archer was in his 30’s (at least) during the “Enterprise” series, then for Scotty to meet him and beam his dog somewhere, he’d have to be a pretty old codger….. (And don’t give me any of that “but the timeline has been altered” bologna…all of that happened *before* the timeline was altered, or at least up to the point where Nero arrived at Kirk’s birth. Not sure where Scotty fits in with that, but presumably he was maybe a young kid…so Archer’s got to be up there in age.

Anyway, a fun movie overall. We’ve been wondering among my family members, so does anyone have any bets on this…was T’Pring not among the survivors of Vulcan? If not, then Spock is probably free to pursue whatever designs he might make on Uhura….

My older sister and I also had a problem with Kirk being promoted from Cadet to Captain, which is a jump of like six officer ranks (Ensign, Lieutenant j.g., Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, and Commander.) It seems a bit unprecedented. Okay, so the guy just saved the planet from destruction...does that mean he's ready for that kind of jump? We're sort of sticklers for military usages, and this one really stuck out. My sister talked about the difference between Captain as the highest ranking officer on a boat or ship, and Captain as a rank, and the term is used both ways, but in the last scene on the bridge, Kirk is definitely wearing the braid of a Captain by rank (two broad bands with a narrow one between).

None of this is to say we didn't like the movie; we loved it! In fact, my sister is stationed in Kuwait right now, is a Colonel in the Army (equivalent to a Captain in the Navy), and got to see one of the early preview showings that were made the servicemen and women over there. She got to meet Chris Pine and talk to him. He said, "Are you a Star Trek fan?" She answered, "Since 1967." He said, "Oh, you are going to *love* this movie!"

So a great film overall, and lots of fun. Comments, anyone?

A few thoughts about your thoughts -- oh, and if it wasn't mentioned before...

"Admiral, there be SPOILERS here!"

-How long do beagles live, exactly? Great line, though! Caught it on the second viewing.

-I had less of a problem with Kirk than I did Scotty. Kirk has always had "mitigating circumstances" on his side when it came to his Starfleet maneuvering. But Scotty was serving time on an ice rock and then suddenly was Chief Engineer? With McCoy, it was explained that the Chief Medical Officer had been killed, but how did Scotty slide into a red shirt?

-And speaking of which, why does nobody have a problem with the fact that Kirk just happened to have been tossed off the ship into the exact same area as the cave Spock was hanging out in? Hey, I was perfectly okay with it because the Old Spock/Kirk scene was so good, but...well, wasn't that a bit convenient?

-Vulcans are still Vulcans, right? Nero didn't change that. So, Spock will be reaching Pon Farr at some point, I'm thinking.

-Finally, all the rumors are pointing to Javier Bardem as Khan. Can i just suggest what a bad idea that is? For the Khan story to be done correctly, he has to be the B-story and cast aside by Kirk, which rightly pisses him off and turns him into the Khan we know and love. Sure, introduce him and leave him out there. Then, make the last movie about him, eh? I'm just sayin'...

Although I have a couple of friends who haven't seen the movie yet, I have informed them that if they haven't seen it by next Monday, they no longer qualify as my friends...therefore, I'm not worried about spoilers! ;o}

Kirk and the cave...okay, it does seem a bit convenient, but let me put it this way: if you were stranded on an ice berg of a planet being attacked by monsters trying to feed on you, you would likely seek the shelter of a cave. If you were left stranded on that planet to watch the destruction of your own, and after that had nothing better to do than wait to freeze to death, you might seek the shelter of a cave. Besides, Spock Prime was probably sending out telepathic waves through space that hit the younger Spock's subconscious and made him eject Kirk into that area. (Yeah, I know, I'm reaching.....)

Uhura better start brushing up on her recipe for Plomik Soup. And maybe she better do some squats so she'll be ready to duck. Of course, if they're already married, that won't be a problem. Hey, maybe Spock and Uhura have a son, and he has a son named Tuvok who becomes a Starfleet officer on the USS Voyager under Captain Janeway.....

Khan?! Do we have to go there?

I have a bit of a worry about basing any of the forthcoming movies (and hopefully there will be many...at least six, since that's how many the original crew got to do, or 6½ if you count half of them being there for the first part of "Generations"....) being based on specific episodes from TOS. If Kirk and the others are in an altered reality, then leave it altered and let's get on with something new. Let some other poor, unsuspecting starship captain find the USS Botony Bay and deal with Khan....

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed when the name for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was announced, because that was never one of my favorite episodes, but the movie was actually tremendous! Well, why revisit the whole Khan thing? I know there are many variations of what could be done with the story, but let's not do too much re-hashing. One of the great fears I have heard expressed is that the new movies will all be homages to TOS episodes, and give everyone the impression that no one has any better ideas. So my opinion, for what it's worth: Keep Khan out of it!

Please Note: This represents only my opinion and does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the management of this site, unless the manager says it does....

I love the nerdery in this discussion. I sadly am not a Trekker/Trekkie so a lot of this stuff is going over my Star Wars loving head, but I will say I don't want a Khan rehash or even a remake. I like Bardem a lot but let's make him a different character. I agree the second should have a very strong villian like Khan, but Dennis is right, the story shouldn't center on him.

There were a lot of convenient things in this film but I let them all go because they had a lot of story and set up to do in just over 2 hours, you can't blame them. Anyone know why older Spock was just sticking around the ice planet though? He knew of the Starfleet outpost and that he could beam anywhere he wanted so why stay in an ice cave? Did he know Kirk would be coming?

Oh well, it's logic like this that ruins a lot of fantasy films boys so let's refrain! It's 2 hours to get out of your head and get your heart racing. I came out of the theatre wanting to be Kirk and join the Starfleet. Mission accomplished.
